What's in this template

Multi-select so people can nominate more than one person, plus an 'someone else' option with comments enabled so nobody outside the list gets missed.

Why peer recognition works better than top-down

Managers see the visible work

The person who unblocked a colleague at 6pm, or quietly fixed something before it broke, doesn't appear in any status report. Their peers saw it.

Peer praise carries more weight

Recognition from someone doing the same job reads as earned. Recognition from a manager reads as management, which is not the same thing.

It surfaces your actual culture

Whoever gets nominated repeatedly tells you what your team genuinely values, which is often not what your values page says.

Enable comments or it's just a popularity contest

The vote alone tells you who. The comment tells you what they did, and that's the part worth reading out.

Run it in three steps

1

Add your team members

Include an 'someone else' option with comments on, so people outside the immediate team can be named.

2

Run it before your team meeting

Send it the morning of, so results are fresh when you read them out.

3

Read the reasons, not just the names

The comments are the recognition. The tally is just how you order them.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I run a peer recognition poll?
Click Use This Template, replace the placeholder names with your team, and click Create Poll. Share it before your weekly meeting.
Should people be able to pick more than one?
Yes, this template has multi-select on. Limiting it to one turns recognition into a competition, which defeats the purpose.
Should it be anonymous?
Usually yes for the vote, but enable comments so people can explain. Anonymous nominations with named reasons works well.
How do I stop it becoming a popularity contest?
Enable comments and require a reason. Reading out what someone did rather than that they won changes the whole dynamic.
How often should I run it?
Weekly or fortnightly, tied to an existing meeting. Monthly is too infrequent for people to remember specific moments.
What if the same person always wins?
Read the comments — it may be genuine, or it may signal that one person is absorbing work that should be distributed.
Should managers be included as options?
Usually not. Including managers turns peer recognition into upward feedback, which is a different exercise. Run a separate poll if you want that.
What if someone is never nominated?
Worth noticing quietly rather than acting on publicly. It sometimes means their work is invisible to peers, which is a structural problem rather than a performance one.
Can I use this for a formal recognition programme?
It works as the nomination stage. Keep the final award decision human — a popularity tally is a poor basis for anything that carries money or status.
